Yesterday, we had the opportunity to learn all about HSD 2025 when Mrs. Bowen-Eggenbraaten came to visit. I found it very interesting the process the district followed when answering the essential question "What do schools need to be like prepare students for the future?". That process is very similar to the process we are following to answer our essential question "How will technology help me as a lifelong learner?"
We are currently in phase 1, the discovery phase. Our research has begun and we are learning as much as we can about schools of the future, skills needed to be most successful, and what tools will help us be prepared.
Mrs. Bowen-Eggenbraaten talked about the same things. The district wanted to learn as much about those ideas as well in order to develop the district's graduate learner outcomes. I am excited to see how what we learn will relate to HSD 2025.
Now it's time to start thinking about phase 2. The phase when we look at everything we have learned and we figure out what it means for you as learners of the future. Think about these guiding questions as we move forward in our inquiry process:
- Is it the technology that is going to prepare us for the future or is it the skills we can gain from utilizing technology?
- What are those skills needed to prepared for jobs, problems, and technologies that don't even exist yet?
- How can technology be used as a tool to prepare us?
Do you have any answers to those questions yet? What are your thoughts? What are your wonders? Share your thinking by commenting below.
How is it even possible to prepare someone for a job that doesn't exist yet If we don't know what skills will needed to develop to work at that job?
ReplyDelete-Noah
That's a good question Noah and that is what we are trying to figure out. Think about what everything we have studied has in common. Is it the technology or the skills?
DeleteI have an answer to How can tech. be used as a tool to prepare us? My answer is: Technology can be used to help students focus. Also it will help us learn how to use technology. If we develop skills on technology I believe it will help us prepare for future technology. Next If you don't know an answer to a question and you can't figure it out after you've asked everybody around you and you still don't understand, you can look up an explanation on the Internet. It will be faster and it will help.
ReplyDelete-Emma
Good point about how technology can be faster. I also agree developing technology skills will help students in the future. Do you think it is more than just technology skills? I keep thinking it's more about your skills as a learner versus you abilities to use technology. What do you think?
DeleteI agree with Noah, what if we go completely in the wrong direction and have to start from scratch? What if every thing we know now won't help us in the future?
ReplyDeleteI agree... but maybe their talking from experience or maybe these people have talked to scientists about what's coming in the future to help prepare their video and now they are helping kids from what they've heard
Delete-Kate
Interesting thought Veronica. That's why I think it's more about what skills you have as a learner (the 4 C's) versus what technology skills you have. Especially since we know technology is changing so rapidly. What do you think?
DeleteMrs. Stubbendick my username is vgirl21 how do I change that?
DeleteWe can use technology as a tool to prepare us for the future by watching videos, visiting websites, and by maybe going on skype with someone who is in science, technology, engineer, or in mathmatics.
ReplyDelete~Sophia
I agree, we can use technology as a tool. Do you ever wonder if there is more to technology than videos, websites, and Skype? It is a good wonder. I hope that question is answered as we continue this inquiry.
DeleteI think that the Sybaloo page will help us study. I also think that typing our notes will save a lot of time and paper. The only question I have is how will the student have to change? We have read, watched videos, and talked about this, but I still don't have a real good answer. Maybe they will a devise only for school, or maybe it is a devise the school provides but you keep it forever as your personal devise,.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the Symbaloo page will help to keep us organized when it comes to our resources. Just like Mr. Tersteeg and some of the other panelists said, if technology can make life easier, it frees people up to go deeper and be more creative.
DeleteAs far as students changing. I personally think it is going to be easier for you than it is for teachers. You are growing up with the technology. Technology has become a part of your daily lives. Some of us from an older generation are working hard to keep up.
Reread your last sentence. I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to say.
How do they know what jobs to prepare us for in the future if they don't know what jobs are in the future?
ReplyDeleteThat's a good question Joey. Copy and paste the followoing link and watch this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax5cNlutAys
DeleteIt names 5 jobs that were not jobs in 2002 and by 2012 were. It's crazy. The video also sticks to our theme that it is not the technology but the skills. The technology is just a tool in preparing students for an unknown future.
I think technology and just using technology will help us.An example if you have a broken arm or leg then you will need to have a X-ray taken which is a form of technology. And if you need know something for a essay you go on the Internet and.Boom! You know it and if you remember it you know it forever and you have now utilized technology.
ReplyDeletethat boom thing is contagious is'nt it
DeleteAnd BOOM, if you do forget, you can always Google it!
DeleteHow come we cant use some of our devises in school when they could help us? how do you know there is going to be future tech?
ReplyDeleteThat's a good question. Do you think I should allow devices in our classroom? What if students only wanted to play games on them? How does that help you and your classmates as learners?
DeleteI wonder how or when the technology will come and if it will come when we're in school?
ReplyDeleteI think the technology is already here! When I was in school, we researched using encyclopedias, found books in the library using a card catalog, and all reports were handwritten (published in pen if we were lucky).
DeleteHow are teachers preparing children for the future if we don't even know what the future is?
ReplyDeleteCalista - Joey asked a similar question. Reread the comment I wrote to him.
Delete"Is it the technology that is going to prepare us for the future or is it the skills we can gain from utilizing technology?"- I say it's the skills that we earn and collect from experiencing technology. When you get a new phone that your really don't know how to use it, you'd most likely want to stay home and master it so you know how to do everything. The next question you asked was,"What are those skills needed to prepared for jobs, problems, and technologies that don't even exist yet?"- I honestly don't know but what MAY be a possibility is that to make the video a final product that isn't false and to share with other teachers, they could've talked with a scientist who works on inventing new technology to find out and then start teaching them. But I really don't have an accurate answer to that one. Well That's all I got for right now!
ReplyDelete-Kate
Well stated!
DeleteThat is a extremely well written comment nice work Kate.
DeleteThe technology is the tool that is going to guide us to be better learners but it is what we take from those tools that counts. To be prepared we need to take the four C's that we learned about while learning about technology. I only have one question. Why would technology hurt and not help if you dont use it the wrong way.
ReplyDelete-Courtney
I think that the skills that you learn from technology will help you in the future, but technology will be a big help when learning.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hannah it is a help practically everywhere, it is a BIG GREAT help to our classrooms in da future and the presant.
ReplyDeleteHow can you teach us about technology that doesn't even exist yet
ReplyDeleteAre we going in the wrong direction and we really DON'T need technology for education?
ReplyDeleteAre there more skills to learn and need to use while using and learning the new technology?
Honestly, it kind of scares me to think about all the bad things about the new tech., it could have everything a person could want in it. They might just be sitting around all the time. But after watching one of the videos, it helped show me a little bit more that technology can show us great things through education.
How do you know that the future technology will be good. How will you prepare use for the future technology when we don't even know about the future technology.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering how you can prepare someone for new jobs that haven't even been invented yet using technology that hasn't been invented? What will we be like if we have all that technology like the stuff in the video where the technology looks like glass?
ReplyDeleteI think it is the skills that we can gain when we are using technology that will help us in the future. If we do figure out an important skill when on technology, it could be really helpful in the future. Technology can be used a a helpful tool in the future when you are trying to figure something out that you don't know and you use the internet to find the answer. I'm wondering what devices will be available in the future.
ReplyDelete-Matt
i think technology helps us in many different ways. First of Google Docs and Google Presentation, help with communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. You can share your thoughts and ideas, along with your special presentations! Your friends can comment on your pieces, and you can work on them together. What other websites are there like this?
ReplyDeletejust to make it clear... the question at the end of my coment ^ is a question for everyone
ReplyDeleteI obviously think that the four C's and three R's must be learned. How do people predict the future of technology? I also think that technology will help us be better learners but I don't know why.
ReplyDeleteI think technology can be used as a tool to prepare us for the future by watching videos and researching things on the Internet. How can people be preparing for jobs that don't exist yet?
ReplyDeleteWe will have to think about jobs that we think they are going to have in the future which will take a lot of thinking
ReplyDeleteThis whole project we are doing on technology is awesome!! It's fun, exciting, and you learn A LOT from it. I really cannot wait to see how technology will have changed our life and school. Just think about how different everything already is from 5 years ago. I think technology makes us GREAT learners, and it has helped us a bunch already!!
ReplyDeleteI think that technology has gone far in the past ten years. In a lot of web sites there are the four C's, communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. For example Google docs and Face Timing has all four C's. I think everybody will be ready for change in technology. What do you think will be different in the future classrooms?
ReplyDeleteWe all know that technology is changing rapidly, so I think that we are learning about technology so we know what it will be like in the future!

ReplyDeleteI think tech. can help us a lot. How can it help us if we don't know what jobs there will be in the future? How can we prepare?
ReplyDeleteThat was a lot of fun! I learned what HSD 2025 was, it the year they goal for better technology and learning. That's also when the 1st graders graduate. Sweet, right? I think the future will be really different. Hopefully it will help kids in the future learn. (Not that its not right now.)
ReplyDeleteI think that technology is great! it is a great tool to me now and it will hopefully be a great tool to me in the future. I also think that it is a little weird thinking that we will most likely be making the new technology in the future. No one knows for sure what the future will bring........
ReplyDeleteOur name is MESP and we learned about hsd 2025 and how it may help us as good and life long learners
ReplyDeleteI thought this was a very interesting talk, and the bookmarks we got sure are cool.
ReplyDeleteThis project was fun and technology really helps in prove our life. Think of our parents when they did testing they had these junky electronics and we have high class electronic, and Google , google has been alive for 15 years and 31 billion use it a day Wow a lot huh
ReplyDeleteI wonder when technology be all of a sudden be HUGE, and if it will effect us in the near future
ReplyDeleteI think technology will help us in the future some day.
ReplyDeleteThis talk was very interesting. It had a lot of information for our project. You can tell that in the near future there is going to be so much more technology that will be able to help us as a learner!
ReplyDeleteI think technology will help solve problems environmentally, in the near future.
ReplyDeleteI hope technology is going to grow even bigger to where they will come out with phone holograms and other things
ReplyDeleteThe future will be amazing with all of it's new gadgets and prodects it's gonna offer us.
ReplyDeleteTECHNOLOGY helps out millions ^
